Amstaff dogs are a breed of dog with certain characteristics that make them stand out among the rest.
It is also referred to as American Sporting Terrier, due to its hunting and tracking abilities. These dogs have unique physical features that help raise their hunting instincts.
This breed has been around for almost 200 years starting from the early 1800s when they were first introduced in the U.S as a hunting dog to compete with German Shorthaired Pointers and English Cocker Spaniels in the field.
They were primarily bred by Americans for American fox hunting but are not restricted only to this activity since they can be used for other purposes as well.
How do you know if your dog is an Amstaff?
Most amstaffs are a little lighter and smaller in size than their other counterparts. They have a very muscular build and weigh about 40-50 pounds.
They have a shorter back and longer head, which makes them appear taller than they really are.
Amstaffs have many unique characteristics that make them stand out from the crowd of other dogs such as:
– Their ears are slightly pointed
– Their tail is bent or curved upwards at the end
– Their paws turn inward so the toes face the body
Is an Amstaff and Staffy the same thing?
The two breeds are different but they are often confused with one another.
Staffies were originally bred as dual-purpose working dogs, farm dogs, and family companions.
Amstaffs were originally bred to hunt foxes in the field but can be used for other purposes as well.
This is because their bodies and hair make them look more like larger foxes than other dogs which is why some may mistake them for being just that- an amstaff fox.
Even though these two breeds are different in their purposes, both have been used to help track down and kill small animals such as rabbits and squirrels.
How can you tell if a pitbull is Amstaff?
When you are looking for a well-bred amstaff, they have double coats with a thick undercoat as well as a long and bushy outer coat.
They also have water resistant hair that provides protection from the sun’s rays which is why most Amstaffs are black and brown in color.
Amstaffs have large and heavy heads with medium sized eyes. They are also very muscular and have a sturdy body.
Watch out for their large ears that stand at attention on top of their head. Their tails are usually docked but not always for Amstaffs.
The color of your Amstaff’s nose is usually either black or tan/brown but this doesn’t always mean it is an amstaff as some dogs may be mixed breeds of am staff and other breeds such as Pit Bull Terriers or Portuguese Water Dogs.
Another way to tell if your dog is an amstaff is by looking at its teeth; they should have four evenly spaced, small, white teeth in each row of their mouth but if it has extra teeth then it is not an amstaff but rather a mixed breed with the physical characteristics of an am staff.
